Butter Tea Recipe: Traditional Tibetan Tea for Winters

Butter Tea is a traditional tea from the Himalayan regions, mainly Tibet, Ladakh, and parts of North India. It is very different from regular milk tea. Butter Tea is rich, salty, and extremely warming, making it perfect for cold climates and high altitudes.

In January 2025, I visited Dharamshala, a hill station in North India. While exploring the town, I came across a quaint little café serving authentic Tibetan cuisine. That is where I tried Butter Tea for the very first time. It was warm, comforting, and exactly what my body needed in that cold weather. The tea felt soothing and deeply relaxing, especially after walking around in the chilly mountain air.

That experience helped me understand why Butter Tea is such an important part of Himalayan food culture.

What is Butter Tea?

Butter Tea, also known as Po Cha, is made using black tea, water, butter, and salt. There is no milk or sugar added. The tea is brewed strong and then blended with butter and salt to create a smooth and creamy drink.

Butter Tea has a savory taste and a thick texture. It may feel unusual at first if you are used to sweet tea, but it grows on you slowly, especially in cold weather.

Why is Butter Tea consumed in cold regions?

Butter Tea helps keep the body warm and provides energy. The butter adds healthy fats, which are useful in cold climates. This tea also helps prevent dehydration and supports the body at high altitudes.

During my Dharamshala trip, Butter Tea felt grounding and nourishing. It was not just a beverage but a calming experience that suited the slow pace of mountain life.

How is Butter Tea prepared?

In the traditional Butter Tea Recipe, black tea leaves are boiled in water for a longer time to create a strong decoction. Butter and salt are then added and blended until the tea becomes creamy and smooth.

Traditionally, a wooden churn is used to mix the tea. At home, a regular blender can be used easily.

BUTTER TEA RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp Black Tea Leaves
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 tbsp Unsalted Butter
  • A pinch of Salt (adjust as per taste)

Method:

  • Add water to a pan and bring it to a boil.
  • Add black tea leaves and simmer on low flame for 8–10 mins till a strong decoction is formed.
  • Strain the tea into a blender jar.
  • Add butter and salt to the hot tea.
  • Blend for a few seconds till the tea becomes smooth and slightly frothy.
  • Pour into a cup and serve hot.

Additional Tips:

  • Always use unsalted butter for better control over taste.
  • Butter Tea tastes best when served fresh and hot.
  • This tea is ideal for cold weather and winter mornings.
