Decoding the Tea Terminologies

As someone who loves tea and tries out various kinds of tea, have you ever found yourself in a maze of peculiar terminologies?  From steeping to tannins, the world of teas is mesmerizing.

The first base of the tea is its brewing process, steepin refers to the process of soaking tea leaves/bags in hot water so the flavor and the aroma gets mixed. The key to unlocking a perfect cup is to keep in mind the steeping time.

Tannins – The Bitter Truth

They contribute a bitter flavor to the tea. They hold antioxidant properties. Tannins can affect the color of the tea because of their ability to interact with other compounds.

Tea grades- A question of quality 

Classifying tea leaves on their basis of shape, size and color. The delicate silvery tips of finest tops to larger robust leaves. Understanding tea grades makes you explore a vast variety of tea options.

Flavor profile- A world of notes 

Tea Flavor profiles refers to various characteristics, aromas and taste found in a vast variety of teas. Each tea has something unique to offer based on its flavor profile.

Aroma vs. Flavor- The Sensory Experience

While sometimes considered as synonyms of others, they both tell distinct aspects of tea. Aroma simply refers to the fragrance of the tea whereas, flavors bind the sensation by the taste buds.

Terroir- The Tea Estate’s Influence

This term is taken from the word ”wine” which tells the unique combination of environmental factors -altitude, soil, and climate that shapes the flavor profile of the tea in the region it is grown.

Infusion: The Art of Release

Infusion refers to the process of releasing flavors and aromas in the liquid. This can be done by steeping, pouring or pressing.  Infusion is the central theme of the tea experience.

Oxidation: The Chemistry of Tea

Oxidation can be termed as a chemical reaction which happens when tea leaves are exposed to oxygen which then comes out as new flavor compounds. The level of oxidation may vary among teas.

Tea Blending: The Art of Combination

Tea blending accounts for combining tea from all over the regions, estates and production methods to make unique flavor profiles. Tea blending has the potential to enhance the flavors.
